If you’re just getting started with your social media presence or even if you are tech savvy and been at the game for years – it’s always a good time to review the Commandments of Social Media Marketing.
It’s vital to your success that you have a basic, yet in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of social media. Choosing to live, breathe, and build a foundation on these commandments will help you serve your customers, build your brand and increase your bottom line.
- Thou Shall Build Trust
It can be challenging to get comfortable promoting your brand on social media because you (the brand) are not in full control of the content that is shared and/or what is said about your brand by others. However, any and all feedback provided by customers about your brand online can be an opportune way for you to optimize and target to your audience even more. Approach them the way they want to be approached. Make it easy for your customers to promote you with positive feedback and recommendations by providing quality customer service. You do this on social media, via Commandment #2.
- Thou Shall Be A Committed Listener
You may feel as though you are doing all the ‘talking’ because you are creating so much content and text for your social media profiles and pages. However, for true success, do more listening and less talking. Read things that your audience is into online and join discussions to learn what’s important to them. Only then can you create content that spark conversations and adds value to their life online.
- Thou Shall Stay Focused & Diligent
It’s better to specialize in one or two areas – than to have a long list of ‘specialties’. Creating a specific and targeted content marketing strategy has a better chance for success than a broad strategy that attempts to have ‘something for everyone’. Also, social media success doesn’t happen overnight. While it’s possible to catch engagement right away, more often than not you’ll need to commit to the long-term to achieve real results.
- Thou Shall Focus On Authentic Engagement
Quality over quantity, every time. It’s better to have 500 online connections who read, share and talk about your brand with their friends and family online, than 10,000 connections who disappear after connecting with you the first time. If you publish quality content and work to build quality followers, they’ll be way more open to sharing your content with their own audiences, and on multiple platforms.
- Thou Shall Create A Strategy
Social media marketing success is the outcome of well-planned strategy, period. It is important for marketers (in-house or hired) to know what they want to achieve, create goals, know which platform is best for your brand, and be able to differentiate between brand awareness or engagement.
